Natchitoches is the oldest permanent settlement in Louisiana. A blending of colonial French and Spanish cultures makes it "The New Orleans of North Louisiana," a melting pot of diversity and charm. Founded in 1714 by Louis Juchereau De St. Denis, the City of Natchitoches was originally established as an outpost on the Red River to facilitate trade with the Spanish in Mexico. This site was selected on the West bank of the Red river near a village of Natchitoches Indians.
Over the years, the Red River changed course, and the resulting 30 miles of waterway was re-named Cane River. The City of Natchitoches overlooks the beautiful and peaceful Cane River. The river is perfect for water skiing, recreational boating, and fishing. Or, just enjoy a peaceful ride down the river, by boat or car, to experience the magnificent antebellum plantations, native wildlife, and true Southern charm.
Today, Natchitoches' infamous Christmas Festival, on the first Saturday of December, attracts thousands of tourists each year. The city is transformed into a Christmas 'Wonderland' adorned with Christmas lights throughout downtown, the Historic district, and on the banks of the Cane River. The Festival culminates with one of the largest and beautiful fireworks displays in the South, set along the downtown riverbank.
The fun of Christmas is not just limited to one weekend in December. The lights and fireworks displays begin Thanksgiving weekend, continue each weekend throughout December through New Year's!
Visitors are also attracted to the Annual Tour of Homes and Plantations, The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, The Steel Magnolias Tour, Jazz festivals along the downtown riverbank, the Melrose Arts and Crafts festival, various folk festivals and much, much more. Add to that the exciting downtown nightlife... wonderful restaurants, live music, beautiful streets...all overlooking the wonderful Cane River.
So, whether it is a relaxing evening or a fun filled vacation in Natchitoches, experience it all while staying at the Jefferson Town House.
